Keep Things in Perspective<=
/span> =
b> (
Remember which one of you is the
swimmer and do not overburden your child with pressure to win or achieve be=
st
times. It’s a sport, it is supposed to be a pleasurable experience for
your child. Let him know that first, he is the child you love and second, h=
e is
a swimmer. Stated another way, place the athlete first and winning second. =
This
doesn’t mean that winning is unimportant; striving to win is essentia=
l to
enjoyable competition and swimming is a competitive sport! However, an
obsession with winning often produces undue pressure, resulting in below par
performances and unhappy children. We award medal and ribbons to the winner=
s,
but that doesn’t mean that everyone else in the race is a loser! =
; Remember
that fun and improvement are equally important and worth striving for. Acce=
pt
both your child’s successes and failures as belonging to the child.
Neither is a reflection on you! You did not swim the race just as you do not
practice and train for the race. In a recent study conducted in the Pacific
Northwest LSC, “58% of coaches believed that parents sometimes, often=
or
almost always lived through their child and defined their self-worth in ter=
ms
of the child’s success.” If swimming is important to your child=
it
should also be important to you. But don’t forget that being a swimme=
r is
only part of who your child is.

Speedo’s tip of the week.
Butterfly Drills with Ian Crocker
This week’s Speedo Tip of =
the
Week is an excerpt from the May-June 2006 issue of Splash, in which special
correspondent Bonnie Moss writes about Ian Crocker’s training regimen.
Here, Moss takes a look at the world record-holder’s technique work. =
The Tip:
The first couple of weeks back into training after a break, Crocker spends =
the
majority of practice focusing on technique.
His favorite drill is =
the
simple one arm fly. He sees a lot of swimmers do this drill as “one a=
rm
free with dolphin kick,” which isn’t beneficial to the stroke. =
Instead, he advises, p=
ress the
chest down and keep the hips up. The power from the stroke comes from hips,=
not
the arms.
Also, keep the recover=
y of the
stroke relaxed. Work on the kick, and keep the head in line with the rest of
the body. Don’t lift the head at all during a non-breathing stroke, a=
nd
when taking a breath, look forward, then get the head right back in line wi=
th
the body.
“I also focus a =
lot on
my underwater kicking,” says Crocker. “It’s definitely my
strength, so I stay under water as long as possible.”
He says practicing lot=
s of
underwater kicking is a huge advantage for speed and advises any flyer to f=
ocus
on powerful dolphin kicking, as it directly strengthens the stroke.
Crocker says when he=
8217;s
racing, he concentrates on his feel for the water.
“I don’t p=
ut 100
percent of my effort in any part of the race until the last 10 meters,̶=
1;
he says. “Otherwise I’ll slip through the water, which is
counteractive. It’s much more effective to build each 50.”

Top
Gun the second time around.
The
Southwest Aquatic Team started a program last year to
achieve clinic-style sessions to teach our swimmers in a more
personal level. This year the team is inviting about 20 swimmers to at=
tend
the 2nd annual Top Gun Clinic. This clinic will focus on
subjects such as Biomechanics, Psychology and Nutrition of swimmi=
ng
for starters. All swimmers will be taped and evaluated in their method of
swimming and in the end, a plan will be set up for the up coming year to
improve their times. This invitation is also extended to
the parents, who will have a first hand chance to learn what their chi=
ld
is doing at workout.
This is the list of children that have been selected for this year:<= o:p>

Board:
Effective with the September 1 dues statement all team dues
categories will be increased $5 per month. Example: Pre-Competitive will
increase from $35 to $40 per month; Senior dues will increase from $55 to $=
60
per month. At the same time we will adjust monthly dues for improvements in
ability and/or aging up. Rafael’s group is based on swimmer ability
(lane), and Polly’s group is based on age - Black 13 to 14 years old,
Senior is 15+.
The dues increase has become necessary to improve the
Club’s cash reserves. Our dues have remained the same since the
Club’s inception October 2000, but it has finally become absolutely
necessary to address our financial requirements. While the number of
swimmers has increased year after year, we also now have four coaches. Beca=
use
of more swimmers, we rent more lanes for practice.
The good news is we have established a quality swimming program
with over 90 swimmers. Thanks to the hard work of our coaches, parents and
board.
